Argentina – Top global exporter of Pulses
Argentina ranks among the top global exporters of pulses. According to the country’s Subsecretariat of Agriculture, over 700,000 hectares are planted annually, producing more than one million tons of beans, chickpeas, lentils, peas, and other varieties. Approximately 90% of this production is exported, due to low domestic consumption. Below is an overview of the most relevant pulses grown in Argentina and the main provinces where they are cultivated:
– Beans Key varieties: Alubia, Black, Mung, Adzuki, and Red (Colorado) beans. These are primarily grown in the northwest region (NOA), particularly in the provinces of Salta, Jujuy, Tucuman, Santiago del Estero, and the northern part of Santa Fe.
– Peas Pea production is concentrated in central Argentina, especially in Buenos Aires, Cordoba, and the central southern area of Santa Fe.
– Chickpeas The main chickpea producing province is Cordoba, followed by Buenos Aires and parts of the northwest (Tucuman and Salta).
– Lentils are also grown in central Argentina, in the same regions as peas: Buenos Aires, Cordoba, and central southern Santa Fe.
Why Argentina Matters in the Global Pulse Market?
Argentina plays a strategic role in global pulse supply, especially in dry bean and chickpea export. Its counter seasonal production allows it to supply markets when Northern Hemisphere countries are off season. In recent years, the global demand for plant-based protein sources has increased significantly, positioning Argentina as a reliable, large-scale supplier to countries in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Argentina’s agro climatic diversity enables it to produce a wide range of pulses across different regions, ensuring year-round availability and strong export volumes.
